At first the hand feels fine. After a while the fingers tighten, the wrist feels heavy and the forearm starts to complain. Nothing dramatic happened. You were not lifting anything huge. The problem was the quiet, constant load that built up over time.

Tendons from the forearm muscles pass through narrow tunnels to move the fingers and wrist. The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel. The ulnar nerve passes near the little finger side. Blood vessels supply the tissues.

All of these structures sit close together. The tendons glide through tight spaces. The nerves pass through narrow tunnels. The joints are small and sensitive to pressure. Because everything is close together, small changes in wrist angle or load can irritate one or more structures.

Working from a sofa

Working at a kitchen counter

Kitchen counters are too high for typing. When the keyboard sits high, the wrists extend and the shoulders lift. This increases joint pressure, tendon friction and nerve tension. People often stand or perch on stools, which reduces forearm support even more. The wrist muscles work harder to stabilise the hand, and the forearm becomes tired quickly.


Working with a laptop only

How Office environment reduces the risk of wrist pain

Office environments reduce these risks because they are designed for desk work. Desks are at the correct height. Proper office chairs are used and most come with armrests. These supports the forearm. External keyboards and mice are used and placed on an office desk. Monitors instead of the laptop screen are used and they sit at eye level and are placed about an arm length away. Lighting is better which reduces glare and shadows that can cause eye strain. And with eye strain you might have to adjust your posture, thereby placing the wrist in an awkward position. People move more and take more breaks. Ergonomic awareness is higher. DSE training are taught and extra support might be given to those struggling and need adjustment.

This is why wrist pain is more common when working from home. The environment increases load on the wrist without people realising it.

How desk wrist pain differs from other wrist injuries

Desk wrist pain is different from sprains, fractures or sports injuries. Those injuries are caused by sudden force, impact or overload. They create sharp pain, swelling or bruising. It may worsen with certain tasks and improve with rest.
