So Who Am I?
I’m a Chartered Physiotherapist UK (Physical Therapist) and Qualified Ergonomist for 20 years. I’m registered with the UK Licencing HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council).
I started my career in the hospital (as you do!). But as time progressed, I was drawn to helping patients prevent injury and not waiting until they get injured and need treatment.
So, in 2012, I took the plunge and decided to go ‘solo’. I became an Ergonomist Consultant. I helped companies (B2B) assess and resolve their risk of musculoskeletal injuries.
I loved it.
Did a fair bit of travelling around the UK. Worked with both national and international companies. Assessed and treated workers, resolved their work-related injuries and returned them to work.
I also conducted hundreds of ergonomic assessments, from DSE to noise and vibration surveys, manual handling to worksite ergonomic assessments.
Did I say I ran ‘solo’?
Yep! I set up shop in a corner of my little bedroom. I didn’t think too much about it. I had a small stowaway dining table and I bought a cheap so-called ‘Ergonomic’ office chair. And that became my workstation.
Like I said I didn’t think too much about it. I was more excited I was freelancing.
5 months later I was in trouble
Yep! 5 months down the line my wrist started aching. It was just a small niggle at first. But it then quickly escalated to sharp pain, ‘pins and needles’ (tingling sensation), sometimes radiating to my elbows. This happened every time I sat at my workstation. My back and neck ached too.
Of course, I’m a Physiotherapist and it was my job to help prevent injuries.
But, I had failed woefully, to protect myself. Somehow I thought I was injury-proof.
It took me a good 6 months before my wrist healed. I learnt the hard way to heed my advice.
But it got me thinking
If I could easily get wrist pain working from home as a physiotherapist, what about you?
Solopreneurs working from home or remotely with no support from ‘an employer’ for occupational health.
Many companies offer ergonomic services and courses to their employees.
But not you.
You are literally working ‘solo’.
Trying to turn your home space into an office. It’s trickier than you thought, right?
But..
Who is looking after you?
Who tells you to stop using that hard chair because it would give you back pain?
Who trains you on how to protect yourself from working-from-home injuries?
Who gives you the best guidelines for buying home office furniture?
How to optimise your home office workspace to be injury-proof?
Who shows you how to sit and work?
What to do when you get injured?
And how to prevent injuries?
Today, I work with solopreneurs and freelancers to resolve their work-related injuries and pain so they can work pain-free, safely and in comfort. Focussed on building the business and life they desire.
